The other members of the quartet were Steve Melling on piano, Geoff Gascoyne on double bass and Martin Drew on drums. The end result was an exhibition of stunning musicianship all round. Peter King (regarded by many as Britain's finest alto player) kept up a high level of energy in his playing and on a couple of occasions sat out to showcase the equally exciting talents of Steve Melling. Geoff Gascoyne was a revelation to me as one of the best bass players I've seen. I do hope the Brighton Jazz Club might be able to book him leading his own band sometime soon. I found Martin Drew (of the New Couriers) to be an excellent drummer. He's constantly in demand and has played with many greats (including Ronnie Scott and Oscar Peterson). I suspect that it's unlikely that we shall see the same quartet return as they are all so busy with various bands and projects. Never the less I shall be keeping an eye out for any of them appearing in Brighton again.
